Introduction
The interest in producing biodegradable polymers by chemical treatment, microorganisms and enzymes has increased to make it easier to dispose after the end of its use without harming the environment. Biodegradable polymers reported a set of issues on their way to becoming effective materials.Biodegradable polymers are materials that can work for a limited time before degrading into readily discarded products through a regulated procedure. They might be made from a variety of wastes or/and bioresources, such as wastes of food, animal, agro-waste as well as other sources such as starch, and cellulose.
Bioplastics made from renewable resources are often less expensive than those made from microbial resources prompting producers to concentrate on making bioplastics from renewable resources. The use of biodegradable polymers has environmental benefits such as regeneration of raw materials, biodegradation and reduction of carbon dioxide emissions that lead to global warming. Microorganisms such as bacteria and fungus may consume biodegradable polymers and convert them to H2O, CO2, and methane. The biodegradation process depends on the material’s composition. The polymer morphology, polymer structure, chemical and radiation treatments, and polymer molecular weight are all parameters that influence the biodegradation process.
Biodegradable polymer applications
Biodegradable polymers have become one of the alternatives to conventional plastics that best meet this objective.
Medicine: Biodegradable polymers can be used in different areas of medicine, unlike conventional plastic polymers. Examples of some applications are implants, bone fixations or sutures.
Agriculture: There are many products in the agricultural sector in which Biodegradable polymers can play a role. Some of these applications can be films /mulches, where, as they are intertwined with the crops, we would avoid having to harvest them later on.
Packaging: The use of biodegradable polymers to manufacture containers and packaging in the food industry (tableware, cutlery, etc.) industry is one of the main applications for this type of material.
In Zist Sabz Polymer petrochemical complex, we play our part in ensuring the polymers and reducing plastic in nature by producing biodegradable polymers.
